May 8, 2019 --
Breakfast is on, and Westwood Elementary School is sending out a public invitation.
On Thursday, May 9, the second annual Westwood Community Breakfast will take place from 8 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Pancakes, fruit and coffee will be served, courtesy of Sinclar Group Forest Products, the Rotary Club of Prince George and the Westwood Parent Advisory Committee.
"You don't have to be from our school, but most people who attend are from our school," said Steve Dalla Lana, Principal at Westwood. "It's a way to start your day, a drop-in sort of activity to connect all those community groups to the community."
Thanks to financial support from Sinclar Group and Rotary, Westwood is one of the schools in School District No. 57 that offers a daily breakfast program for students. Sinclar and Rotary each donate $5,000, and that money goes to the Westwood PAC.
"PAC actually buys the food and volunteers every day," Dalla Lana said. "All we're doing is expanding this daily activity to a community activity."
Sinclar and Rotary started sponsorship of the Westwood daily breakfast program two years ago. Last year, the groups made the same commitment to Spruceland Elementary School. Dalla Lana said the plan next school year is for Sinclar and Rotary to add a third school to the program, which means an annual donation of $30,000 to make sure kids in the district start their school days on full stomachs.
For Thursday, Dalla Lana is expecting between 100 and 150 guests.
"The kids come in and they love it," Dalla Lana said. "They bring their families because here's a time where mom and dad (or) guardians get to come and sit beside them and touch base and get breakfast too."
Entrance to Thursday's Westwood Community Breakfast will be via the side doors of the gymnasium.
Westwood Elementary School is located at 2633 Vanier Drive.
