The Board of Education embarked on a healthy schools initiative in the 1990s when it introduced a smoking policy restricting student's ability to smoke on school property. The new provincial law (Bill 10) outlining this legislation and the responsibilities of Boards of Education and their employees can be viewed at
HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES
The Board of Education's initiative continued in 2005-2006 when the district moved to encourage healthy food choices and to restrict the number of less nutricious food types available in schools. The Healthy Choices Committee recommendations were immediately implemented and have been updated as a result of Ministry of Education movement in the same direction.

The latest initiative of the Ministry of Education is the requirement of daily physical activity, thirty minutes, for students from kindergarten to grade nine. Students on the graduation program, grades 10-12, must complete 150 minutes of physical activity per week during the school year.
