May 28, 2019 --
Spruceland Traditional Elementary is inviting families in the school community to its Spring Carnival.
The event, a celebration of warmer weather and the winding down of the school year, happens on the Spruceland grounds from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. At the Spring Carnival, families will have the chance to participate in games, face painting and even a pie eating contest.
There could also be some surprises in store. Spruceland Principal Sid Jawanda has heard rumblings he might need to have a dry set of clothes handy.
"We'll have all our staff participating and volunteering – I believe I'm going to get some water balloons or sponges thrown at me," he said with a laugh. "We couldn't get a dunk tank. The PAC had looked into it and they said it was very expensive to rent one, and no one seemed to have one."
This is the first year for the Spruceland Spring Carnival.
"This is kind of our year-end event," Jawanda said. "In the past it's been a night of music and a silent auction so this year we changed it to a carnival outside.
"Being inside in late May, early June just felt wrong when we've got beautiful weather outside. We've got arguably the nicest school grounds in Prince George so we thought, 'Let's get out there and use them.'"
The carnival will include a performance by the band Barefoot Fridays, a professional group formed by four members of the Spruceland staff – Bill Logan, Chris Goodwin, Carolyn Mlynowski and Curtis Abriel.
As well as the feast for the ears, there will be plenty of hot and cold treats to satisfy hunger. Frank's Food Truck will be on site, serving up hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries and poutine, while Frozen Paddle will be dishing out its popular hand-crafted ice cream.
Jawanda and the Spruceland staff are hoping the carnival attracts a sizable crowd. The school's student population is 370.
"We'd love to see every kid and a set of parents – that's ideal," Jawanda said. "But if we get a couple hundred, that's fantastic."
Admission to the Spruceland Traditional Spring Carnival is $5 per family. This is a cash-only event (game tickets, food and ice cream).
Proceeds from the carnival will go toward supporting Spruceland's many year-end events.
