May 2, 2019 --

The Yellowhead Rotary Club of Prince George, in partnership with School District No. 57 (Prince George), is hosting Adventures in Health Care, an experiential program that showcases career pathways and opportunities in health sciences.

Adventures in Health Care happens May 6-9, 2019 in Prince George. Grade 10 and 11 students applied for admission to the 40 program seats available. Twenty-nine students from the School District No. 57 region and 11 from other locations around the province were successful in gaining participation.

Adventures in Health Care will see participants gain hands-on experience in a variety of health sciences settings. Students will be introduced to the types of jobs available at AiMHi (Day 1), attend sessions at the College of New Caledonia and the University of Northern British Columbia (Day 2 and Day 3 respectively), and will spend the fourth and final day at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia.

"Students will be gathering to look at the different opportunities that AiMHi, the college, the university and Northern Health provide," said the Yellowhead Rotary Club's Ron Davis, who serves as program chair.

"There will be no classrooms, no lectures. They'll be in small groups, no more than 10."

  • At AiMHi, by meeting with actual employees, students will have the chance to identify some of the skills required to work in the Community Living field: providing support and services to adults and children with unique needs.
  • At the College of New Caledonia, students will get a feel for Medical Radiography Technology, Sonography, Dental Studies, Medical Laboratory Technology and Nursing.

  • At the University of Northern British Columbia, students will take part in seven workshops: Psychology: The Brain; Rehabilitation Services; Anatomy and Physiology; Gene School; Northern Medical Program; Chemistry in Pharmacology; and Cultural Safety and Respect in Healthcare.
  • At the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia, with officials from Northern Health coordinating the activities, students will participate in a simulation of a Norwalk virus outbreak management scenario, receive healthcare career counselling from Northern Health recruiters and rotate among several medical simulation sessions: Speech Language Pathology/Audiology; CPR; Intubation; Intravenous Insertion; Physiotherapy; Occupational Therapy; and Nurse Practitioners.

AiMHi, the College of New Caledonia, the University of Northern British Columbia and Northern Health are collaborators in Adventures in Health Care. This is the program's third year of operation.
