Alternative Suspension Program

January 05, 2023

AltSus2.jpg

Alternative Suspension is a YMCA program (developed by the Y of Quebec) that is for youth aged 12 to 17 who have been or are at risk of being suspended from school due to struggles with choices and behaviour. In Prince George, Alternative Suspension is located at 490 Quebec St. as part of the Foundry extension building and is operated by our local YMCA in partnership with SD57.

The YMCA Alternative Suspension program is an opportunity for students to hit pause and take time outside of the school environment to refocus. It is a tool that may be used either in a preventative way (to reset before a situation worsens) or during an active period of suspension from school.

Participation at YMCA Alternative Suspension is a non-punitive experience. The main goal is to offer help and support, not discipline.  The program provides a break, during which students can focus, get organized and feel motivated in a new environment -- all while receiving guidance from our qualified youth workers. The experience is an opportunity for a fresh start, in which students can develop momentum for a successful reintegration back to the school environment.

While at YMCA Alternative Suspension, a youth can expect to:

-Keep up on academic work

-Receive support from our youth workers

-Spend time completing workshops focusing on personal development

-Connect with community resources for additional assistance

-Set goals for school success
